During applications such as underground mining, tunnelling, boring, basement excavation and shipping, workers can be exposed to dangerous levels of diesel particulate matter from the vehicles or equipment they use. This includes construction site plant, forklifts, lorries and tractors, and fixed-power sources, including compressors, generators and power plants.
Insufficient exhaust fume control and ventilation during the use of such equipment can have a significant impact on workers’ health. The risk of damage also increases significantly when DPM is present in confined or enclosed spaces.
Short-term exposure to diesel particulate matter can cause irritation to the respiratory system and eyes as well as chronic respiratory ill health, such as coughing and breathlessness. In June 2012, the International Agency for Research on Cancer classified DPM as a Group 1 carcinogen in humans. Soot particulate and the sulphur and nitrogen oxides found in these emissions are now known to cause lung cancer and, to a lesser extent, bladder cancer. However, severe damage such as this may not be evident immediately. In fact, it can take up to ten, twenty or even thirty years for disease to become apparent.
A proven methodology, devised by the RVT Group, to ensure effective control of all on-site health hazards.
Construction site equipment, such as forklifts, lorries, tractors, generators and compressors, emit dangerous levels of diesel fumes, especially when being used in confined spaces. It is therefore important to capture and filter these fumes at source, whilst continuously forcing fresh air into the work area, to ensure that workers can continue their activities in a safe environment.
Excessive diesel fume exposure can result in anything from dizziness and fatigue, to kidney cancer and even death. Failure to conduct a suitable DEEE’s assessment and/or breach of COSHH regulations, will leave you in hot water with the HSE and may even land you in court.
RVT believe that effective exhaust control can be managed in three easy steps;
Filtration units are the ideal solutions for hazardous diesel particulate matter on site. By fitting these filters at the source of emissions, you allow the fume to be captured, contained and controlled. To mitigate any DPM at risk of migrating to other areas, you can view our Ventex® ventilation systems here.
RVT offer a wide range of exhaust fume control solutions which are available to hire.
